Last night for dinner, we had pork roast, asparagus, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and garlic toast. (Somebody call Ripley's - the woman cooked a meal!) It was some good eatin', I tell ya. I can say that because the roast came from the Kroger Deli, the potatoes from a box, and the toast and asparagus from the freezer. Oh yeah, I got me some mad skillz in the kitchen. Fo' shizzle.
I fixed plates for the kids, and Andrew took one look at his, and said "Why would anyone think an 11-year-old boy likes asparagus?" This was a hypothetical question, apparently, because he ate it without complaining. That, or he was starving. You just don't know about those 11-yr-old boys.
Anyway, just for fun, I thought I'd revisit the Intriguing Question.
Several possible answers (wisecracks) come to mind:
a) I heard it tastes like boogers, and I wanted your opinion.
b) Well gee, son, I didn't think you'd like it; I was hoping it would kill you.
c) It's not asparagus. It's green stuff I found growing in the back of the fridge.
Now I want to know what your response (snappy comeback) might have been. Get your smarty-pants on, and play along!

First of all, this sounds like my kind of meal - impressive, delicious and EASY. So I'll play. I think I would have said, "Well, son, you'd just be amazed some of the weird places you can find long, green, slimy things to serve for dinner." You know for sure he's gonna think NOSE.
Gag. I just made myself sick. And I happen to LOVE asparagus. Geez.
Asparagus? You thought this was asparagus?! No, no! These are green catapillars, steamed to perfection, and served in a prepard remoulade sauce! Now, hush and eat it before it gets cold. ;-)
And it DOES sound good. We had Texas Hash and green beans with potatoes. :-)
Because it costs a fortune. Everybody knows kids cost a fortune, or not really - they only cost all you have and just a smidge more. Thats why an 11 year old boy should love asparagus.
Get this Bev. Dad had tons of asparagus growing along his garden fence and he tore it all out because he didn't like the way it looked. Can you believe that? Free asparagus. My favorite vegetable.
Have to tell you Brenda. I don't know a single eleven year old who appreciates anything more complicated than a green bean.
xoxoxo
We have weird kids, Barb.
I never had asparagus when I was growing up, not that I recall. I love it now, though, especially fresh, but frozen keeps longer. Both my girls prefer the canned stuff, but Carl's kids prefer fresh or frozen.
We once made a spinach asparagus souffle that turned out rather scary looking, although it was edible and very tasty. The asparagus in it looked like green fingers, so we called it Grinch Casserole, and the kids ate it right up. And they liked it.
